Practical Relationship Advice for Teen Girls
Contrary to popular belief, The Cupcake Theory: The Secret Ingredient to Being Happy in Your Relationships does not advocate making your significant other bring you cupcakes on a daily basis. Author Clara Lee merely uses the cupcake analogy to illustrate common relationship pitfalls.
The basic premise of this book is that you are the cupcake. You are unique, wonderful, and full of substance. Your partner is the frosting. The frosting should enhance, not overpower, the cupcake.
A smart baker knows how to pair frosting and cupcake flavors together to create something that is mouth-wateringly delicious. A smart woman has the strength to wait for a guy who enhances the qualities she already likes about herself instead of trying to change her “flavor” to match his.
The Cupcake Theory is just 64 pages long, so it’s a quick read. The whimsical illustrations and clever analogies help set the title apart from other relationship self-help books on the market.
While the advice in this book is a little basic for many adult women, I think it would be an awesome gift for a teen who is just starting to date or needs a bit of encouragement after a nasty breakup. I remember being a young girl and being so desperate for a boyfriend that I put up with dates who were controlling, jealous, and/or exceptionally needy.
What I really needed was someone to tell me that it was OK to just be myself and that I didn’t need to keep trying to change my personality to make my boyfriend happy.
Actual cupcakes would have helped too, so don’t forget to stop at the local bakery on your way home from the bookstore.
