Practical Advice for Dealing with an Unplanned Pregnancy

I read a lot of pregnancy books when I was pregnant with my son. But, most books I found made the mistake of assuming I’d tried to get pregnant. They weren’t terribly too helpful when it came to giving advice about dealing with the ups and downs of an unplanned pregnancy. (I did come across a few books for teen moms, but they weren’t too helpful either because I was married and out of college before my surprise baby made his appearance.)

Since 49% of pregnancies are unplanned, Oops! How to Rock the Mother of All Surprises addresses a pretty big market. Author Tracy Moore, a contributor to Jezebel.com, offers a humorous look at her own unplanned pregnancy while giving readers practical advice about how to get through the next nine months without losing their minds.

She answers pressing questions such as:

  • What will people say about me?
  • Did I screw up my chances for a healthy baby?
  • What will an unplanned baby do to my relationship?
  • How can I have a baby if I’m not a baby person?

I absolutely adored Oops! How to Rock the Mother of All Surprises because Moore is the type of girlfriend I wish I would have had to comfort me during my own unplanned pregnancy. She’s blunt about the fact that being pregnant kind of sucks and that it takes a lot of soul searching to reconcile yourself to the fact that your life is about to change forever.

After reading the book, however, you feel like you’re not alone in your predicament. Moore’s writing gives you the sense that your unplanned pregnancy, while not an ideal situation, is somehow going to work out OK in the end.

That’s actually pretty cool. I don’t think there is much out there in the pregnancy world that deals with the emotional turmoil a woman may be going through.
