A Story of Friendship, Secrets, and Forgiveness
Sweet Salt Air, the newest release from Barbara Delinsky, tells the story of two friends and their tumultuous summer on the fictional Maine island of Quinnipeague.
Charlotte and Nicole used to be best friends, but have drifted apart over the years. Charlotte is a successful travel writer. Nicole writes a food blog and is married to Julian, a prominent surgeon.
One summer, Nicole gets a contract to write a cookbook about Maine island food. She asks Charlotte to come assist with the book, which sets the stage to eventually reveal a lot of secrets. Nicole reveals her husband has been hiding a serious illness.
In the middle of developing her own romance with a local bad boy, Charlotte struggles with the decision to share information that could help Julian, but devastate Nicole.
While Sweet Salt Air was a cute story that I enjoyed more than last year’s Escape, it was a little too predictable for my taste. By the time I was halfway through, I’d guessed how everything was going to end. Still, Charlotte and Nicole are both very likable characters and I found it easy to relate the challenges they were facing.
Friendships, like marriages, are tricky and Delinsky does a good job of resolving the issues the characters face in a way that seems believable.
Sweet Salt Air would be a good a good beach read, but it’s not the type of page turner that will tempt you to stay up past your bedtime to see what’s going to happen next.
