My son is young enough that he doesn’t want to go places by himself just yet. This is good because the idea of letting him roam the streets without an adult completely freaks me out.
In a nearby town, two young girls not much older than him were kidnapped and murdered in broad daylight this summer. I know it’s not realistic, but part of me is tempted to lock him in a tower until he’s 18.
If you are looking for a way to give your child more independence while still keeping him or her safe, you might want to look into the new Lifeline Response app for smartphones. This app is a “next generation 911″ personal safety system.
It has a thumb mode where you keep your thumb pressed on the button when walking at night. If you stop pressing the button, you need to enter a disarm code or LifeLine Response will call you. If you don’t answer, the authorities will be contacted.
The timer mode is designed for when you’re going for a run or visiting a friend. You can set the timer for up to 90 minutes. At the end of the 90 minutes, you need to enter the disarm code. If you don’t enter the code, LifeLine Response tries to reach you and contacts authorities if there’s no answer.
LifeLine Response app costs $21.99 per year, which works out to be less than $2 per month for 24/7 protection. You can also opt for a $3.99 monthly subscription.
What do you think of this app? Would you purchase a service like LifeLine Response to help keep your kids safe?
