Do you want to learn a new set of skills? Well, making a pillowcase is one of the easiest crafts to learn. Besides, learning how to make a pillowcase can help you add style to your bed or sitting room. That being said, it almost goes without saying that you have to acquaint yourself with the basics of making a pillow. Here is a step by step guide on what you need to know to make a basic pillowcase using the rolling method.
Things You’ll Need
- 3/4 yard of main fabric, 45 inches wide
- 1/4 yard of coordinating fabric, 45 inches wide
- 1 inch of accent fabric, 45 inches wide
- Scissors or rotary cutter
- Pins
- Thread
- Seam gauge
Step 1 – Choose the Fabric
You will need to pick out fabric that has a comfortable feel against the skin. The best choice would be soft cotton, flannel or satin. Be sure to select a piece of fabric that matches the color scheme in your room, particularly if you intend to use the pillowcase on your bed. Also, remember the following:
- Choose a washable fabric if you’re going to sleep on the pillow case
- If you intend to use the pillow for decorative purpose, the fabric doesn’t have to be soft
Step 2 – Cut the Fabric to Size
For a standard pillow case, use a pair of scissors or rotary cutter to cut out a piece that is 45 inches by 36 inches. In case you’re using a patterned fabric, be sure to cut the fabric in a way that the pattern is straight.
Step 3 – Fold the Fabric in Half
Fold the fabric lengthwise so that the finished sides (also known as the right sides) are adjacent to each other. The unfinished (wrongs sides) should be facing out.
Step 4 – Stitch the Fabric
Start by sewing the long side and one short side. Whenever possible, use a sewing machine to help you make a straight stitch up the long side of the fabric. When done, turn the fabric and continue making stitches one of the short sides. Turn the fabric inside out. Remember to:
- Use a thread that matches your fabric.
- Use a contrasting thread only when you’re making the pillow for decorative purposes
- Take your time to ensure that the seam is straight if you’re making the stitches using your hand.
Consider pinning the fabric with straight pins if need be.
Step 5 – Hem the Open Side
Fold the fabric such that you can create a ½ inch hem. Iron the fabric to create a crease and fold the fabric back again so that you can create a 3-inch hem. Iron the fabric again. Using a sewing machine, make stitches around the base to keep the hem in place.
Step 6 – Decorate the Pillow Case
To make the pillowcase more attractive, you may consider adding accessories such as ribbons or decorative laces. The decorative accessories should be added over the hemline to conceal the stitches. Press the pillowcase when done.
Important Tip to Remember – While the fabric is often sold with a width of 45 inches, it may vary slightly. Therefore, always check to ensure the width is as per your requirement.
The Bottom Line
It will take you 3 to 4 hours to finish making a pillow case even if you’re a beginner. All you need is the right fabric, tools, and the skills. Nonetheless, the above guide should set you on the right launch pad to make a basic pillowcase.
