My son loves to take pictures. He tends to be very rough with his toys though, so I try to keep him away from my digital camera. He received the VTech Kidizoom Camera as a Christmas present in 2010. This has got to be the most durable camera ever made! It’s been dropped, thrown, and kicked countless times, yet still works perfectly.

The controls of the camera are very intuitive, so most children will need very little assistance before they begin taking pictures. Obviously, the quality of photos from the VTech Kidizoom Camera isn’t what you’d find in a digital camera made for adults. However, the pictures were much better than what I expected. I’ve emailed them to friends and family, none of whom could believe they were taken by a kid with a toy camera!

Beyond taking basic pictures, the VTech Kidizoom Camera offers options for adding special effects to your photos. You can frame someone’s face with a heart, give them a cartoon cowboy hat on their head, or make it look like you’re throwing a pie in their face. When my son took this camera to a family gathering, even the adults were giggling at the cute effects it can make!

There’s no spot for an SD card in the VTech Kidizoom Camera, so you need to use your computer’s USB port to download and save the pictures. The internal storage holds hundreds of pictures, however. Your little shutterbug should be able to play for weeks without needing any assistance from Mom or Dad.

Like many electronics for children, the Vtech Kidizoom Camera goes through batteries fairly quickly. If you purchase this camera for your child, investing in rechargeable batteries is a good idea.

Thanks for the head’s up! I’m thinking about birthday ideas for my daughter, and a camera was among the possibilities…
