As mom to a 5 year-old little girl, I can’t help but be concerned about how my daughter will be influenced by our culture’s definition of, and obsession with, beauty.
I’ve already had several instances of her coming to me saying, “I don’t look cute in this.” And to think I assumed I had until she was a tween to worry about her self-image? Boy, was I ever wrong.
So I was really curious about the message behind the new DVD in the Veggie Tales series, SweetPea Beauty: A Girl After God’s Own Heart. We received a review copy several days ago. My kids have really enjoyed all of the Veggie Tales productions they’ve seen, and this movie was no exception.
There are actually two segments to the DVD. The first, SweetPea Beauty, is the story of what is in one’s true heart. SweetPea is banished from the kingdom in which she lives when the insecure Queen Blueberry is told that only the “most beautiful” can rule the land. With the help of some other vegetables, SweetPea escapes her banishment and helps Queen Blueberry see that she’s special in the way that God made her.
The second segment, Snoodlerella, is a take on Cinderella. A bespectacled, brace-wearing Snoodlerella gets a massive makeover before she attends the royal ball. But at midnight, she returns to her original self. Fortunately, the good King is able to appreciate Snoodlerella just the way she is and helps her overcome her focus on her appearance.
My daughter really loved both of the segments of this video. She thought all of the characters were cute. When I asked her to tell me what lesson she learned from the movie, she said, “that God loves us just the way we are, and that it’s what is on the inside of us that counts, not what we look like.”
Pretty powerful stuff. A great message with a religious foundation. I love that this DVD reinforces all of the things we try to teach our kids at home. With so many outside pressures over appearance weighing on kids at a younger age, watching this movie at home as a family will really help drive those messages home in a fun and engaging way.
My daughter will be watching Veggie Tales: SweetPea Beauty over and over again. Heck, the message bears repeating for me, too!
