Twilight Turtle
What can be more frustrating to a parent than a child who doesn’t sleep well?
Am I right?
Both of my kids sleep through the night now, but when they didn’t, I would have cut off my right toe for the secret to achieving a good night’s sleep. I tried everything! No idea was too crazy for the chance to reclaim my precious 8 hours a night!
My daughter is 5 and still deathly afraid of the dark. She’s so afraid that none of the traditional techniques have worked. I have tried leaving music on. I have tried leaving a light on in the room next to hers. I tried a nightlight that projected a fairy scene on her ceiling.
All have been epic failures. She sleeps with a full light on – using a 40 watt bulb. Yes, I’ve tried lower wattages and she freaks out.
So when the folks behind Twilight Turtle, gave me a review sample, I jumped on it.
Twilight Turtle is a small turtle that’s a little over a foot long. His head and feet are soft, like a plush animal. But his shell contains a projection light that displays constellations of stars on your child’s ceiling.
You or the child can choose one of three display colors – blue, green and amber – for the constellation display.
Twilight Turtle stays on automatically for 45 minutes, then shuts off.
Our turtle arrived yesterday and I explained to my daughter that we were going to try out a new kind of nightlight that would allow her to lay in bed and look at the stars.
She squealed with delight when we pulled the turtle out of its box. She grabbed it and ran around with it, pretending it was her pet and introducing it to her 5,893 Build-A-Bears.
She seriously wanted to push this thing around in a dolly stroller and play with it like a toy.
We went into a dark closet to check out the stars. She thought it was awesome and had fun switching between the 3 colors. She said, “I can hardly wait until it’s dark out to use my turtle.”
Okay…this is a good sign, I thought.
When bedtime came, we placed the Twilight Turtle on a small stool in the middle of her room and turned the lights off. Wow! The ENTIRE ceiling was covered in stars. It projects really well. She chose blue for her star color and she happily went to bed.
She never got up during the night to turn on her bedside light. Yay!
The only downside I’ve found thus far is that the Twilight Turtle runs on batteries – there’s no AC adapter. That’s kind of a bummer, but it does allow for the turtle to be placed literally anywhere in the room – so I understand why.
We’ve only got one night under our belt so it’s too soon to call the Twilight Turtle a success, but I’m hopeful that a darker bedroom and peaceful sleep is in our future!
