Necessity truly is the mother of invention. That is why so many moms have become overnight millionaires, creating products that solve everyday problems that come up when raising kids!

I visit a lot of parenting websites and forums. One of the most common questions I see regarding traveling with kids is “how do I keep my kids entertained on long journeys?”

Sadly, we can’t just give our kids 4 hours’ of candy to keep them occupied, strap them into a car seat and hope for the best. And speaking from experience? Letting a child play Nintendo DS on windy roads? Can leave you with a puke-filled car. There have to be better options.

And that’s exactly what the mom and founder of TravelKiddy thought, too.

She was living with her four kids in Hong Kong and she was having difficulty keeping her kids entertained. She developed travel activity kits for her own kids, and the business grew from there.

TravelKiddy is a line of self-contained, age-based activity kits that come inside their own carrying bag. And, they’re TSA friendly!

The TravelKiddy pictured above is for 6 to 9 year-olds. It’s full of fun, unusual and brain-stimulating activities to keep kids occupied for hours, whether on a plane or standing in line while you wait for the newest iPhone.

The coolest part of the kit, though, is the separately-packaged “return kit” which has another smaller set of activities for your journey home. Take the big kit out en route to your destination, when kids are most antsy, and hide the return kit until you’re on your way home – for when they wake up from their nap.

But wait! There’s more. You get a parent pack, too, with stain removing wipes, Tylenol, tissues, earplugs and more: the stuff you always forget to pack!

The kits for 3-5 year olds are equally full of great stuff.

And for kids ages 10 and up, the Think About It activity kit, full of puzzles and brainteasers, is a perfect diversion.

The TravelKiddy activity kits do not come cheap: $40 to 50 for the entire set.  It seems a little bit pricey; however, I’m fairly certain that when I’ve put together “fun kits” myself for the kiddos, I’ve spent about that much after adding up all of the craptastic things I pick up at the dollar store!

I love the idea; I think I’d have to test one out, though to be certain that it was worth the money. What do you think?

I used to think I was so clever and innovative when I’d pack a “surprise backpack” full of new toys and games and bits and bobs for a long flight or day out in the car.

Then I realized everyone else does it, too. But it’s still a great idea!

Personally I don’t see the harm in both a DVD movie (with headphones so I don’t have to listen, too) or doing nothing, just daydreaming out the window, barely awake as their sweet heads bob in a futile attempt not to fall asleep.
