Tips for Buying Furniture & Accessories For the Kids

When selecting kids furniture, it’s sometimes hard to know exactly what you should buy for the long-term, and what’s going to get destroyed within a year. I know from personal experience.

Putting together a kid’s room can be very expensive. When buying expensive pieces of furniture, you’ll want to consider a few things like:

Safety – Purchase quality furniture that doesn’t wobble when you do a test shake. Avoid pieces with sharp edges or exposed metal pieces.

Size – Child-sized furniture is appealing for kids and adults alike. It’s cute, light-weight and closer to the ground, but might not be practical as your child grows. So purchase these types of pieces at reasonable prices. So when your child’s feet are hanging over the bottom of a tiny bed in a few years, it won’t be quite as painful to pull out your wallet to replace the bed with a larger one.

Avoid Themes - You can find just about anything with your child’s favorite TV or movie character on it…but don’t buy furniture with it on it! As much as your daughter loves seeing her favorite princess on her bed and dresser when she is 4, she might be embarrassed by it by age 8. Then you need to figure out if you should replace the furniture or try to refinish it. By avoiding themes, you don’t have that problem. Buy her princess bedding and accessories instead and save the headache.

Accenting – With a solid foundation — neutral, classically-designed furniture, your child could easily enjoy the same bedroom into high school. It’s easy to change bedding, posters, area rugs, paint, pillows and curtains instead of furniture…and much cheaper too!

Now it’s time to shop! I love The Land Of Nod. They sell cool, high quality, yet affordable kids furniture, bedding, gear, storage, and just about everything else you’d need for a kid’s bedroom or playroom.

Check out these floor cushions. They’re made of corduroy material that is durable but soft. The cover comes off so you can throw it in the washing machine when the kids spill on them. They come in 4 colors and three different sizes. I love these cushions!

These storage containers are so cool! When you don’t need to use them, they fold out flat for easy storage. They’re made of polypropylene, which makes them almost impossible for the kids to destroy.

Land of Nod also sells expensive furniture, but it’s high quality furniture your child can have forever.

What other tips do you have for decorating a child’s room?

I just bought a bed for my two boys. You have valuable pointers that i should have read first. I’m wondering if it was indeed so smart to buy a bed with a combo of Natural, white and blue. I hope the colors work. Should have left the color for the bedding. Lemme go check out land of nod.

It is so important to have the right furniture for you baby and toddler and safety is number one. Baby furniture does not have to go to the baby furniture graveyard. A baby changing table can be turned into a kids dresser by adding baskets to it for enclosed storage and the top of it can be used to display your child’s favorite toy or books. I use a baby changing table in my quilting studio to store and display my quilts and quilting notions. This is just one example. The furniture does not wear out, the child out grows the furniture and with a little imagination your child’s furniture can last a life time.
