Tide Washing Machine Cleaner: Does It Really Work?

Wash your washing machine? It sounds weird, right? But think about it: you put lots and lots of dirt, grime, oils, and other icky stuff in that machine everyday. Over time, all of that stuff builds up and leaves a grayish residue on the inside of your machine…do you know what I’m talking about? Yuck right?! Well, Tide claims that the Tide Washing Machine Cleaner will get your washer clean. I’ve tried it, and I’m not so sure.

Apparently, the Tide Washing Machine Cleaner penetrates and lifts away residues and deposits left behind in your washing machine. It freshens your washer and leaves behind a fresh, clean scent. It can work on both high efficiency and non-high efficiency machines, and is simple to use.

I’ve tried it, and I’m not so sure it’s all that. I have used it a few times (it does say you might need to use it more than once), and I don’t think my washing machine looks any cleaner. And the “fresh, clean scent?” It doesn’t smell very good – it smells like a strong perfume scent…not fresh or clean. Fake flowers is more like it.

Does it do a better job than the occasional cup of bleach in an empty load? I don’t think so at all. And with the bleach, there’s no fake flower smell leftover – bleach actually smells fresh and clean!

I have a standard top-loading washer, and maybe people who have high efficiency front loading washers (that tend to have odor problems anyways) would notice a difference. But me? I’ll stick to good old bleach instead.

Have you tried the Tide Washing Machine Cleaner? What did you think about it?

I don’t even bother to use bleach much, unless it’s with a load of whites. Because my machine seems perfectly fine; I do run a short wash by itself once in a while or after a particularly dirty load (towels after giving the dog a bath, for instance) and that seems to do the job. Should I be worried about residue?

I never knew I had to clean my washer. Come to think of it, it makes a drop of sense considering all the dirt it processes. on the other hand, i should hope it comes out clean after a load. i do trust that machine with my clothes.

I wanted to try it, but I also have the old-style washer, so, I guess I’ll just do the old remedies, too!
