The Original Homework Box

I’m trying to figure out if I’m still asleep, or I’m really missing something.

The Original Homework Box is a storage solution for school-age kids. It consists of a file box made of recycled plastic. Inside, it comes with a ruler, scissors, stapler and staples, tape dispenser and tape, a glue stick, pencils and a pencil sharpener. The supplies fit inside a smaller container that sits just inside the top of the file box.

This is supposed to help kids stay organized when it’s time to do homework. The kid benefits. The manufacturer says the Homework Box “encourages independence” and “cuts down on parents’ need to nag.”

I don’t get it.

I have a second grader. So we’ve been doing the homework thing for a couple of years now.

The kid can’t remember to put a water bottle in his backpack. Why would he think to put his ruler back into his plastic box? Why would this box keep him more organized?

He has a homework folder that comes home daily that all of his work is supposed to be kept inside. Why do I need a file box on top of that?

Maybe as kids are in the higher grades, and they have a bit more responsibility, this product would be of value. But it seems to me that the value in this product is for the parent, not the child.

Parents like things to be put away and organized and know where the kid’s scissors are when they’re needed. So from that standpoint, giving the kid a box and saying “put your stuff in here” could make the parent’s life easier.

But I’m pretty sure that, instead of spending $19.99 on this, I could get a file box from Target for $7 and spend $4 picking up the supplies on clearance during back-to-school sales. In fact, I have most of these supplies around the house already.

I’m also cheap.

If you’re not as cheap as me, and you get the value in the Original Homework Box, it can be purchased at Moms Made Easy.
