There’s nothing like trying to get your first grader to brush their teeth and do it well. How do you explain to them that they need to brush longer and that they haven’t quite removed the gunk off their little teeth effectively?

Quite frankly, it can be exhausting to continuously send them back into the bathroom to brush for a few more minutes  and it can be hard to avoid just grabbing that toothbrush so you can handle it yourself when you know they should be developing independence.  So what’s a mom to do? How can we simplify this process a bit?

Plaque revealing gels and tablets.

I first came across this in the dentist office. They had a gel that they put on my daughters teeth to show her just where those pesky “sugar bugs” like to hang out on her teeth and I thought #1, the term “sugar bugs” was brilliant. Giving plaque a personality was a fun way to make it more interesting.

#2, making plaque more visible to lazy children (and parents) everywhere was equally as brilliant! By covering the teeth in this gel after her first go at brushing her teeth with her “very best efforts” she was able to see just how terribly she was brushing. So, after she could “see” them better, she put forth much more effort and voila!  better brushing followed.

So where can you find these plaque revealing agents? Easily online at places like Amazon or at your local drugstore.

You’re welcome.

Those pesky sugar bugs are not thanking me but…meh…your dental bill should go down significantly!

Again, you’re welcome.

What are your teeth brushing tricks?
