SunSmarty UV Sunwear

Kids accumulate 50 to 80% of their lifetime sun exposure before age 18.

That one statistic underscores how important sun protection for children can be. We’ve all heard about staying out of the sun during peak hours, covering our bodies as much as we can, and of course, using sunscreens (even that has become controversial).

I was recently surprised to learn that a plain T-shirt only gives 5 UPF sun protection – not much. Despite our best efforts to keep our kids’ skin covered, even that might not be enough.

There are plenty of UPF-protectant clothing items out there for kids and the choices are fantastic.

But I found SunSmarty this week, which adds a neat reminder to distracted, hot and busy parents while their kids are outside.

SunSmart apparel has a set of logo designs to pick from. The logo changes color as the sun exposure increases, thereby reminding parents to apply more sunscreen to children’s exposed areas. Let’s face it, we’ve all had those times where our kids have been out running around and time gets away from us. Soon we find ourselves racing to reapply sunscreen to avoid burns.

Let’s take the Superman UV Guard shirt pictured above. As your kid runs around in this shirt, the logo changes to say to you, “Hey, dingbat. Put some more sunscreen on me.” Here’s a picture of the before-and-after.

Pretty cool, right? Note: this product does require you to pay attention to your child and not be sipping margaritas all afternoon while you chat with your girlfriend. It does not apply sunscreen for you, sadly!

SunSmarty makes dozens and dozens of different shirts, shorts, hats, you name it. They have color-changing logo designs for both boys and girls. The Graffiti Love logo is really cute for girls.

SunSmarty has something for everyone. It’s a great time right  now to commit to better sun protection for your kids this year. Go here to view SunSmarty’s product line.

I hope i can remember without a reminder. You’d have to remind me to put on this shirt on my kid, and he has to like it first.

Great idea! I was surprised when I too learned that even with a tee shirt on, your kid can get some sun damage through it. I don’t think it matters if the shirt is wet or dry, so even when swimming there should be sunscreen under the tee shirt, if your kids (or YOU!) go swimming with one on to protect your shoulders.
