Stokke Tripp Trapp High Chair Review

Choosing the right highchair is serious business. Pick the wrong one and your child will fidget and complain about the chair AS WELL AS whatever food you put in front of her. Not good. Choose the right one and you still may in for a few meal time battles, but at least they won’t be about the chair.

The Stokke Tripp Trapp highchair sits at the table, using the table top as a “food tray” instead of a tray that is removable. This is a big consideration and one that you should think about realistically – do you want to be able to train your child to eat at the table right off the bat or do you want a chair that basically locks the child into their own table?

With a highchair and tray attached, you can move the highchair directly next to the food source (i.e. fridge) and easily offer her whatever you have on hand. Not so with one that fits at the table like the Tripp Trapp. However, with a chair that uses the table, disciplining is a tad easier – if food is thrown, then you can simply back your child away from the table and “punish” by taking her food away.

Stokke works great in this instance as its large base allows for you to scoot the chair out easily without worrying that it will tip over. On this point, I’ve had MUCH experience. On the flip side, a toddler can easily use her feet on the side of the table and push herself back away from the table…a situation we, unfortunately, also have had much experience with.

With the Stokke, you can use the baby attachment for when baby can sit but isn’t all that stable. My mom calls this round-bottom baby. Too early to sit on their own, but old enough to begin the adventure that is eating solids. This attachment is easy to use, easier to clean and extremely useful. Plus, you can still secure baby to the highchair with the straps, though, to be honest, we often didn’t use the straps as the baby seat secured her just fine. I’m sure the manufacturers at Stokke wouldn’t like this, but in the real world, sometimes you gotta go with the flow, right?

The Stokke Tripp Trapp Highchair can be sized to fit just about any baby or toddler. In fact, I believe the capacity is 250 lbs, so your child can use this until well after high school. What high schooler do you know of who still uses a highchair, though?

Overall, the Stokke Tripp Trapp chair affords a child a fair amount of independence when learning how to eat. Independence in a good way – it can easily transition your family from baby’s first tastes to tackling table manners with an older child who still may need to be secured to the chair. We’ve used this in our family for over 2 years now and it’s been a great highchair to have. In fact, with our second child now here, I’m considering buying another one as our first child still uses (and loves) her Tripp Trapp.
