One Line A Day: A Five-Year Memory Book

Have you ever kicked off a new year with a resolution that you’d keep a journal?

I have. Several times, in fact. Even with the advent of personal blogging, there is something about taking a pen to paper and actually writing stuff down that has some appeal. It feels more permanent and personal.

The resolution to keep a journal is as difficult to maintain as most other New Year’s resolutions. It requires commitment and time every single day. And really, how much can I write about the average day in my life as a mom?

Even I wouldn’t want to read my own mindless drivel about chauffeuring my kids to school and yelling at them to eat their dinner EVERY day for a year.

A friend of mine once said, “As a parent, you should shoot for finding just five amazing minutes in each day, because the rest of the day is probably going to be challenging, frustrating and hard.”

This One Line A Day: A Five-Year Memory Book, seems to be designed for the people who only want to capture that 5 amazing minutes a day, or only have 5 minutes a day to journal.

The journal takes away the weighty responsibility of writing a tome each day into an endless set of blank pages. You write one line a day for a year – just enough to capture those five amazing minutes, bad or good.

Each calendar day gets one page, and on that page is space to write one line each year for five years. So you can look back and see what you did one, two, three or four years ago.

Of course, the drawback to this concept is that you might have to go back and read with disgust how you yelled at your kids on the same day for five years. Maybe that’s enlightening to some people, but it could be depressing as well!

Another issue is what you do with the days where something really earth-shattering happens? What if someone close to you passes away or you celebrate your anniversary? Not a lot of space to reflect on the really big moments.

Anyway, I think the book is a neat idea for those who want to journal but are just strapped for time.  You can purchase the One Line A Day: A Five Year Memory Book at various online retailers like Borders Books for about $16.

well, I HAVE been promising myself that I’d get better about remembering to write down the funny/goofy/sweet things my daughter says as she grows, and I’ve been really bad about it. Having a short line to write does sound more accessible that a whole blank page staring back at you.

i beg to differ. I do think describing carpool is enjoyable to read. we all have our distinct flavor to it. a one liner seems to be so boring, it will be a greater challenge to keep up this chore. on the other hand, a journal that k can fill to my hearts content when i feel like it, makes a bigger splash. will i be interested in many years from now to read one liners, especially if they are nothing too wise?
