Nutritional Yeast Flavoring Is Fantastic for Those Who Don’t Eat Cheese

When I first heard about nutritional yeast flavoring, I was completely skeptical. I thought there was no way it’d really taste like cheese, and I expected the texture to be off-putting.

Still, I’m a sucker for a new health food, and this one ended up being no exception, especially when I had a 20 percent off coupon for Vitamin Shoppe.

The “nutritional” in the name is no joke. In one tablespoon, you’re only adding 20 calories. You’re also adding two grams of protein, more than 100% of your daily recommended value of B2, B3, B6, and B12. You’re also getting 40% of your folic acid recommendation, which is good if you’re hoping to get pregnant again soon.

I’ve read that other brands are pretty nasty, but I can’t comment on those. I’ve only tried the Bragg brand, which really does taste like cheese. You could sprinkle it on plain popcorn for a healthy snack or top off your lasagna, spaghetti, or vegetables with it.

I’ve even seen a recipe that mimics hot wings by using this on cauliflower and either coating or dipping it in hot sauce. This particular brand of nutritional yeast tastes more like cheddar than mozzarella or Parmesan (so the flavor’s pretty strong), and to me, it has a slightly smoky flavor.

The Bragg’s brand is sugar-free, non-GMO, vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, salt-free, kosher-certified, and of course loaded with B vitamins.

If you’re feeling lethargic but you’ve already been checked out at the doctor for underlying issues, you may benefit from a boost in B vitamins. This is one way to do it without taking a supplement in pill-form.

I have been meaning to buy this — it will be a little harder to find now that I am in an area with some limited and overpriced health food options, but thank you for the reminder.
