I adore silicone ice cube trays with fun novelty shapes. In fact, I have a whole cabinet full of them in my kitchen. I have stars, hearts, smiley faces, skulls, Lego people, pumpkins, snowmen, zombie brains, and a whole bunch of other designs I can’t think of at the moment. These “Stone Cold” ice cube trays from Fred and Friends are the cutest trays I’ve seen, however.

If you’re not the crafty type, you’re probably wondering why I have 50 ice cube trays for a family of three. The reason is that these trays are good for so much more than just making shaped ice. You can use them with candy melts to make little decorations for cakes or cupcakes. Shaped sugar cubes are also fun to make as decorations. Follow the instructions on the  Skip to My Lou website for this project.

Silicone ice cube trays are also great for use as Play-Doh molds. Since the trays are so flexible, it’s easy for little kids to pop the design out on their own.

Another project that goes over well with my son and his friends is making decorative shaped crayons. Simply peel all the papers off your old broken crayons, snap them into tiny pieces, and melt them in the ice cube tray in either your microwave or the oven on low heat.

The result is a set of pretty multicolored crayons that provide hours of fun. They are also great to use as thrifty party favors if you’re planning a birthday party and need goody bag ideas! The only thing you need to worry about is that once you’ve used the tray for making crayons, it’s no longer good for any food related purpose.

Do you like crafting with silicone ice cube trays? If so, what are your favorite projects to make?
