If you want to jump on the fuchsia lipstick bandwagon and you want something bright but not too bright, plus you’re afraid of smearing it all over everything once you do get the courage to swipe one on and venture out in public, try NARS Funny Face.

Yes, it’s a total splurge, but it’s also a semi-matte fuchsia shade that sinks in, lasts and lasts, doesn’t smear, and is a face-brightening shade that will complement several cool and neutral skin tones. It’s a blue-based berry pink that’s bright without being fluorescent (compared to Schiap, also from NARS, it’s downright subdued).

For me, I can get away with less makeup than usual when I wear this color. I also don’t have to reapply because it sinks into my lips and acts almost like a stain, but it’s more opaque than that.

The semi-matte formula adheres so well, that also means that when I kiss my daughter’s cheek or her hand brushes across my mouth, it’s not so likely to transfer or smear. In my experience, the color doesn’t deepen over the course of the day, as some reds and pinks tend to do.

Because there’s less of a need to reapply thanks to the formula, it’ll last longer than some of the creamier options out there that smudge off or just disappear for no apparent reason over the course of a couple of hours.

This color is bright enough to liven up your face when you’re tired or just want to look extra special, but it’s not so bright that you’ll need to be paranoid that everyone’s staring at you. Wear it to the grocery store, school pick-up—wherever a normal day takes you.
