Like many people, I have declared losing weight and getting into shape one of my New Year’s resolutions for this year…just like I do every year! But this time, I’m actually holding myself accountable and also taking the right steps to make sure I succeed. I’m not going to go on some crazy diet or become an exercising addict. Nope, I’m going to take baby steps. And one of the first ones was to sign up with MyFitnessPal.com.

Why did I do it? Well, I’m kind of a social media addict (you can find me as @NatalieHoage on Twitter!) and so I asked Twitter what websites they found useful for weight loss. I was shocked by the number of responses I got for MyFitnessPal.com, and decided to check it out.

Why is it great? Well besides being free, it was recommended by so many people! According to the site, medical studies show that keeping a food journal DOUBLES your weight loss, and the site allows you to do that either online, on your smart phone, or via their new Calorie Counter & Diet Tracker by MyFitnessPal iPad app. All free, no strings attached.

There’s a calorie counter, a food journal, exercise suggestions, recipes, and support…lots of support! There’s also a huge database of just about any food you can think of, including all of the nutritional information as well. Here’s an example:

Smart choice? No. So this will help me be smart about what I’m putting in my body…and if I’m craving it and MUST.HAVE.IT., then maybe I only eat a small sized portion. It’s all about portion control and smart eating!

What do you think of MyFitnessPal.com? Have you used it? Did it work?

I’ve been using it along with my Android phone, which is so awesome! The best part is that my camera is used as a barcode reader, which makes creating a breakfast or lunch with the right calories (and nutrients) a snap! The rest of the foods are easily searchable in the database. I’ve also found it handy to create often used recipes to enter a favorite whole meal at once, or if you have a common meal with multiple items, you can copy it to another day.
