If your kids are anything like mine, they quickly tire of the same old licensed-character coloring books. I have a giant stack of coloring books in our playroom that never get used! That’s why this Modern Patterns Molecular Coloring Book seems really cool - it puts a new twist on a classic kids’ activity.

This book is actually part of a line of coloring books designed for brainy kids and parents. The deal is that each book has a set of different type of 12 abstract coloring patterns that are repeated on 23 pages. There are 6 books in the series – each with different pattern types.

The Molecular Book has cool patterns of, well, molecules! Other books focus on circular, linear, botanical and optical patterns.  What I find really interesting about these books is that they can be used with kids of different ages. Littler kids can use them to help fine tune their motor skills because the images are so detailed and have so many areas to color. Older kids can look at them from a physics or geometry perspective.

My kids have friends that seem to already have every popular toy and game out there, and these books would be a great birthday present idea for them. I’d also consider keeping one of these in the car for when we go to restaurants and my kids get bored with coloring on the kids’ menu.

The Modern Patterns Coloring Book series can be purchased at Mindware, which is a toy store for “brainy kids.” Each coloring book is $6.95. This is a bit more expensive than traditional coloring books, but they do have the advantage of being original and different!

    Hello There,
I wanted to let you know that I have a couple of your books, one is called Threads of Time and the other is DesignScapes. I really enjoy them for I copy a page from the book and I color with colored pencils, but I was wondering if you have a catalog on the different coloring books that you have. I did find Modern Patterns Molecular and Modern Patterns Optical in which I would be interested in.
