If you’re not hoping for a true red and you don’t mind your lipstick good and bright, Maybelline’s ColorSensational Red Revolution is a good choice. I personally love it and it reminds me of a MAC lipstick that sold out before I could get my hands on it (Love Goddess from the Marilyn Monroe collection), but I wasn’t looking for classic red.
When I put it on, the color seems thin and sheer, but for some reason, as it warms up on my lips, it gets brighter and more intense. It goes from sinking into the cracks in my lips to disguising them and my lips look plumper than usual.
The color is a mix of pink, red, and coral. I think it would be beautiful on medium to fair skin tones with cool or warm undertones. I’m very fair with cool undertones, and I think it perks up my complexion quite a bit. If you’re familiar with MAC’s Impassioned lipstick, the color is similar to that. The finish is glossier and not quite as opaque. It glides on and doesn’t dry my lips out.
Two things about the wear: I could see it bleeding easily on people who tend to have that problem, and it was difficult to make it look even along my lip line. It smudges off easily onto coffee cups and straws. The flip side of that, though, is that it leaves a nice stain behind that lasts for hours.
I think it’s important to know what to expect before you purchase this lipstick or you’ll be disappointed. However, for under $10 (I paid around $7 for mine at Target), it’s worth a try if you like bold, pinkish red lips.
