MamAmor Dolls: I’m Not Quite Sure How I Feel About These Dolls
Well, maybe I should rephrase that title and include that I don’t know if I think these dolls are exactly appropriate for a 3-year old! MamAmor dolls are pregnant, birthing, and breastfeeding dolls. These dolls can be used as educational tools that demonstrate normal, natural birth, breastfeeding and bonding. That part I think is very cool.
The site says that these dolls can also be used to help prepare kids for the arrival of a new sibling. The dolls are supposed to be appropriate for ages 3 and older…and that’s where I have the issue. I don’t necessarily think a 3 year old needs to be taught how a baby comes into the world.
My kids (ages 4, 2, and 2) know they came out of my tummy, but have never asked how they got in or out of it. I think it might be difficult, and even strange, for a 3 year old to see a birth. Am I the only one that feels this way?
That said, these dolls are cool! Each is 100% handcrafted with “love and attention to detail.” Each takes anywhere from 8 to 20 hours to be completed, depending on the custom requests (eye color, skin color, hair color). Mama Dolls are 18 to 20 inches long; babies are 5 inches long. All fabrics are double sewn to ensure durability.
These dolls are excellent teaching tools for parents and educators. For kids? I’m not so sure. On one hand I can understand expectant parents wanting to educate their children about the upcoming birth of a sibling, but is it really necessary to get into heavy detail with a young child? What are your thoughts on this subject or about the dolls?
