Little Passports

Little Passports

When we were newly pregnant with our first child, my husband and I talked frequently about how we were going to travel the world with our kids, expose them to as many diverse cultures as possible, and raise true “world citizens.”

And then life somehow gets in the way of those types of ambitions and you end up spending your free time at Chuck E. Cheese. Sigh.

We still hope someday to travel internationally with the kids. Their minds are so culturally open. But until we have the budget and the time to do so? I’m thinking about getting Little Passports.

Little Passports is a monthly educational subscription service that sends your child all sorts of games, activities and fun about a different country every month.

Here’s how it works. After you sign up, Little Passports will mail your child the first month’s Explorer Kit. The kit includes a travel suitcase with a letter from “Sam” and “Sofia,” the two kids who are the main characters of the Little Passports adventures. It also comes with a world wall map, travel passport, stickers and activities, and a “boarding pass” that gives the child access to additional enrichment online.

Each subsequent month, your child will get new adventure packages for a different country each time. Once again, they’ll get a letter from Sam and Sofia and country-specific enrichment materials (including online stuff) and a country souvenir, which can be a music CD, a postcard, a craft project and more.

The kits appear to be well-produced, colorful and engaging!

I’ve ordered monthly subscription kits like this before and my kids have always loved them. What child doesn’t love getting packages in the mail, right?

Little Passports is designed for kids ages 5-10. I’d be curious to know how they are able to present the information in way that is simple enough for a 5 year-old to understand, but complex enough to engage a 10 year-old.

The subscriptions range from about $10.95/month to $13.95/month depending upon how many months you purchase. The preschooler kit I used to order that was structured like this was over $20, so this seems like a really great price to me.

Interesting idea. Kids certainly do love to get stuff in the mail. It might give them the travel bug. It would be nice to know if the kits contain items that are worth the $10-$13 dollar a month price tag.

You and your husband had obviously been in the clouds before the baby was born. Now we all know that traveling with kids is hell. This type of travel kit is perfect. If grandma wouldn’t be living overseas, I would definitely just substitute.
