Little Librarian

One thing I’ve learned in the last 7 years of parenting is that once a child’s spark for reading is ignited, it’s hard to put out.

But different children find that spark at different times. My daughter caught it early, but my 7 year-old son just developed his passion for reading in the last 6 months.

The librarian at our local elementary school is amazing. She has a real passion for reading and it shows in how she interacts with the kids.

So when I saw this Little Librarian play kit, it occurred to me that this could be a great way to help foster that reader’s spark in a child.

Little Librarian arms a child with all of the tools he or she needs to learn about the workings of a library and even organizing his/her own personal book collection.

The play kit comes with file folders, book pockets, book cards, library cards, reading awards, overdue slips and a reading journal.

This kit is a great set to introduce to beginning readers. They’ll learn the important skills of borrowing books from a library (especially those fines that can add up!). I could also see this being a great resource for school or preschool librarians to use as a teaching tool with their younger students.

I think any child who loves pretend play would enjoy this set. My daughter, who loves sorting stuff, would have a blast putting her books on her shelf like a real library, loaning her books out to her brother and I, and the best part? Issuing overdue notices. What a great way to put a few more pennies in that piggy bank!

Little Librarian Kit is available for purchase at specialty retailers nationwide and online for $20 at Amazon:

I think this is fantastic! Librarians are important and generally under-rated members of the community. They are a wealth of knowledge and a great help to most people. A good role-model.

And think, you can encourage your child to lead a “Story Time” circle where she or he can read to you, siblings and a collection of stuffed animals. So cute!

OOh! this is perfect. My son has gotten the reading bug pretty early too, a thing i am forever grateful for. I can imagine him sharing his wealth with other kids. It gives him back more than any other gift ever could.
