Trying to keep a preschooler occupied can be challenging. They’re full of curiosity, get bored easily, and are always go-go-go.

Enter a website entirely devoted to helping you prepare your child for school with games and videos that are fun and that they will love. They are educational, but your child will think that they are just playing games on the computer! And did I mention that it’s free?

Wonder what I’m talking about? It’s PBSKids.org!

If your kids watch educational programs like mine do, you can even pick a game or watch a video based on his/her favorite character. My son loves Barney…I think it goes without saying that I do not. But he really does! My son can play a game that features Barney. There’s a huge selection of characters including Curious George, Dr. Seuss, Mr. Rogers, Elmo, and more.

Not only are there online games and videos, but you can also print out coloring sheets of the characters for your child to color or paint on, there are online stories read by the characters for your child to follow along with, and there’s music – all kids like music!

There’s also a section called PBS Kids Play!, and it provides your child with 30 essential skills he/she will need for school. This section of the site does have a monthly fee – it’s $9.95 a month – but it seems like you get a lot of bang for your buck. It includes more games and shows, a self-paced learning program, and it advances with your child as he/she learns. Also, if you pay for 6 months or a year in advance, the price per month goes down.

But don’t worry – if you aren’t sure if you are willing to shell out 10 bucks a month for something your kid may or may not use, you can sign up for a 10 day free trial!

I’m going to try it with my son for 10 days. What do you think? Are you going to check it out for your kids?

I agree. The PBS site was one of the first sites I allowed my child to go to. She liked playing games with characters she knew and liked. I never got the paid membership, so I’ll be interested to hear what you think.
