Kideos – Safe Videos for Kids

Kids never cease to amaze me with how quickly they can pick up on a concept that you think they’re paying zero attention to.

Case in point: my 7 year-old wanted help getting through a Mario video game. We found some video walk-throughs of the game on YouTube and watched with him while he figured out how to get “unstuck” from the game. He was thrilled. Problem solved.

A few days later, I found him in our playroom on the kids’ computer, surfing around YouTube watching Mario and Spongebob videos. Yikes! I had no idea he was paying attention to the URL or anything else besides Mario when we first took him to YouTube.

I was wrong. Boy, was I wrong!

As you can imagine, that opened up a whole new can of worms in the house. YouTube doesn’t have great parental controls, but there is a ton of fun stuff for kids to watch. What’s a parent to do?

Head over to Kideos, that’s what.

Kideos is a kid-friendly video viewing site. Each video is selected and personally viewed by a council of parents to ensure that each one is safe for children.

There are tons of videos for kids to choose from. My children love the animal videos (think “America’s Funniest Home Videos”) and some of the licensed character videos that are available for watching.

What I particularly like about this site is that it’s well-organized. Kids can watch videos specifically designed for their age group (up to age 10), or select popular videos, videos by category (such as animals, Harry Potter, extreme sports, or Disney movies), featured videos and more.

One other important note: unlike some of the major children’s websites that are tied to a cable network, you won’t find big old flashing, distracting advertisements that lure kids away from what they’re doing and put them down a rabbithole of clicking on websites until they end up God knows where!

I highly recommend Kideos for a fun occasional diversion when you want your kids playing in a safe environment online!
