We’ve all been there: you decide to take the kids out with you to grab some dinner at a casual restaurant. There are more people waiting than you thought there would be, which means there’s going to be some time before the food will be brought out. The kids start out okay, but are soon trying to climb out of their seats and whining because they are hungry.

Well, here’s a possible solution: the Jaq Jaq Bird 2-in-1 Chalk Mats. The mat is an eco-friendly reversible placemat/chalkboard.

What is cool about this product is that you can use it both at home or when you are out and about. One side is a placemat (I love this roadway one because if you bring along some Hot Wheels, the kids can drive their cars around on it, but flip it over and the other side is a chalkboard.

Another cool feature is that the mats are waterproof, stain-resistant, BPA, PVC, and phthalate free.

I would lose the chalk if I had to keep it separate from the mat, but you can store your chalk in the attached pocket. It rolls up and ties with grain ribbon, which makes for easy transporting.

Now if the Jaq Jaq mat is as cool as I think it is, then I probably will end up also buying a 2-in-1 Activity Place Mat as well; it’s a flat version of the chalk mats for the home.

So what do you think? I think the mats are a fantastic idea, and they got great reviews on amazon.com. If you visit Jaq Jaq’s website, you’ll probably be really surprised and excited by some of their products – I know I was!

Great product. Instead of playing with food, my kids will play with the mat under it. I like this.

While this seems like a handy item to have with you, I have to laugh of the image of all these new mommies with their giant purses full to overflowing with toys and items and blankets and all the little handy-dandy, can’t-do-without gadgets and gizmos we “need” to keep our little ones busy.

How about a game of I Spy With My Little Eye, anybody? How about finger games and nursery rhymes? How about making up a story about a family waiting in line at a restaurant when suddenly aliens arrive looking for french fries? How about a little interaction; a little imagination?
