If you value healthy yet convenient snack options, you’ve probably tried several Kashi products. Kashi recently sent me a package of their new chocolate and almond soft baked squares to sample.
I had high hopes for the chocolate squares, but this product didn’t go over well at all in my house. I often make homemade brownies, so I think the problem is that we’re just too accustomed to the “sweet” taste of a traditional desert for this to be a realistic lunchbox option.
When I’m trying to entice my son to eat healthy snacks, I tend to have better results if they’re not just copies of his favorite unhealthy treats. He raves about my baked goods to anyone who will listen, so the folks at Kashi aren’t going to convince him to pick healthy faux brownies over the real thing anytime soon.
The almond soft baked squares, on the other hand, were much better. I think it helped that I had fewer preconceived notions about what these were “supposed” to taste like. I really liked the inclusion of the almond slivers on top of the squares.
I’ve seen several online reviews saying Kashi soft baked squares are too dry. Although I did think the snacks were a little dry, it wasn’t out of the ordinary compared to other packaged snacks I’ve had in the past. I like that these have four grams of fiber per serving and a heavy dose of whole grains.
Even though I think we’ll take a pass on the chocolate squares, the almond squares were a product I could see including in my son’s lunchbox this year or picking up for myself as a nasty mid-afternoon snack.
Have you tried Kashi’s new soft baked squares? If so, what did you think?
