Jamtown Music Rhythm Paks

I grew up in a house full of music. My mom loved having music on at all times, and at any given moment you’d find one of my brothers playing Stairway To Heaven on electric guitar, my other brother hashing out a drum solo (God help us), and me playing something more traditional on keyboards.

It’s been fun to watch my kids dabble a bit in music and see what sparks their interest. We have an old piano that they love to plunk around on, and when they were preschoolers, we had a bunch of plastic percussion toys that they loved.

So I was really excited to discover these Jamtown Rhythm Paks online.

These are beautiful percussion instrument sets.

The one pictured above is called the Jam Junior. It includes 3 instruments handcrafted by Peruvian artisans: a set of wood rhythm sticks, a shaker and a drum. The drum is fashioned of goat skin set over a wood frame.

The set also comes with rhythm cards, a carrying bag, a parent guide and – what? A CASSETTE tape?

They probably need to upgrade that portion to CD! Yikes!

Jamtown Junior is $49.95.

Jamtown also offers a 5-instrument set that  includes a gourd Scraper with rasp, goat hoof shaker, double bell with striker, frame drum, and large coconut claves. This set is $99.95 and also comes with a carrying back and activity cards. Thankfully, it does not come with a cassette you can no longer use!

All of the items are fair-trade, too.

These are instruments that will probably last a lifetime and I love the idea that they’re made by artisans. To see what other collections they offer, go to the Jamtown website.

LOL! Cassette tapes aren’t THAT old, are they? Are they? When did they stop manufacturing them? Maybe 15 – 20 years ago. OMG, that IS old. So am I. :D

Love the handmade instruments, though. Very earthy, very hippie. Whoa.
