Family Dinner Games

Family Dinner Games

The institution of the family dinner is falling by the wayside. With kids participating in multiple activities per week, (or even multiple activities per day!), times when a family can gather together for a meal are fewer and farther between.

If your family is anything like mine, sometimes having a family dinner feels more trouble than it’s worth. When the kids are little, they don’t want to stay seated and don’t want to eat their vegetables. When the kids are of school age, engaging them in conversation is often met with mumbled “I don’t know”s and “I don’t remember”s.

Well, Family Time Fun’s Family Dinner Games aim to make the family mealtime fun for everyone. Family Dinner Games are a group of family activity card games that you play while you’re eating your meal. They are designed to spark conversation and fun.

Each game set comes with a slew of laminated recipe-like cards, each with its own activity or game on it.

We have the Beginner Dinner Games set. This set is for families with kids age 3-6. In this set, there are 51 different games. We like to let the kids each choose one game per meal. For example, one game, called Fruit and Veggie Fun, has each family member think of a fruit or vegetable, and the other members must guess the answer using yes or no questions.

Another game has someone create the first sentence of a story, with each family member taking turns adding to the story. Other games tackle more delicate subjects that all children face, such as presenting a scenario about bullying and asking each family member what they would do.

My kids love the games and they’re also small enough to travel with. Family Time Fun makes 5 different dinner game sets: The Original Dinner Games, for children age 6-12, The Beginner Dinner Games, Gather Round Dinner Games, Gather Round Restaurant Game and the Pizza Night Family Dinner Game.

Family Dinner games are available at retailers online, including Amazon and range from $15.95 to $24.95.

These are a great idea! I’ve seen a different version by another company and they really work in helping to draw out an actual conversation from your kids. And, if the kids think they are playing a game, they are more likely to participate!
