Eames House of Cards

Eames House of Cards

Quick! What’s your go-to activity to keep your kids busy at restaurants?

Don’t say playing with the sugar packets. Especially if they’re open.

One of our favorites is taking the little square coasters a lot of family-friendly restaurants use and building a house of cards with them. Or should I say, attempting to build a house of cards with them!

My 7 year-old finds it fascinating and hilarious. Oh, the minds of boys!

Of course, he quickly loses interest when he realizes that he can’t build a tower past the second level. Enter sugar packets!

He would love this Eames House of Cards set at the Museum of Modern Art Store.

This is not a set of normal playing cards. You see, this card set is designed to be built into a house!

Each card has a picture of an animal, vegetable or mineral on it. It also has six interlocking slots to hook it up to the other cards and build, build, build!

You can even bend these puppies a little bit to make soaring arches, as shown in the picture.

The card set comes in two sizes.  The small set contains 54 cards and is $25; the medium set has 32 cards for $35. That doesn’t make much sense to me – seems like the larger set should have more cards, not less. But perhaps due to size, they give fewer cards.

This set will make a great gift for a child over the age of 5. They can take the cards on road trips (no flipping cards at the driver, please!), use at home, or, as I suggested, as a time-killer at restaurants.

You can purchase the Eames House of Cards at the Museum of  Modern Art Store.

Great game, but i can see it breaking in two seconds. Its that type of flimsy cardboard that had better be cheap. Nope, $35 is too much.

I’ll say this: the pictures on the cards are pretty. But I think I’d buy a regular pack of playing cards for $0.99 that the kids can build with (and actually be challenging), or play “War” or “Go Fish” or “Crazy Eights” or any other number of games.

I’m sure no restaurant wants to see that massive set-up on the table when they come by with plates of hot food!
