Like it or not, fast food restaurants are here to stay. Most families are always on the move, which means they want food that is quick and easy to grab when it’s time to eat. Fast food restaurants have been trying to come up with new offerings to entice customers who are tired of the standard burger and fries. Burger King has recently added several new menu items, including fruit smoothies.

Last week, I tried the strawberry banana smoothie at Burger King. I believe the other available flavor smoothie flavor is tropical mango. Overall, the smoothie isn’t bad. I could easily make something just as good at home, but it’s pretty difficult to mess up a smoothie.

If I’m away from home and in need of an on-the-go meal, the smoothie is something I’d definitely consider ordering. I appreciate having more options to choose from during those times when ordering fast food is a necessity.

What about nutrition? The Burger King website says the smoothies are made with real fruit and low fat yogurt. A medium smoothie is listed at 310 calories. If you’re trying to lose weight, it’s probably not the best choice to go with your Whopper. But, I’m guessing it’s better than most of what you’d find on the Burger King menu if enjoyed in moderation.

My son is at the point where he thinks he’s too grown-up for the kid’s meal and wants to order off the adult menu. I’m OK with letting him have a smoothie and a Whopper Jr. or one of the new chicken snack wraps.

Have you tried the new smoothies at Burger King? If so, tell us what you think!

McDonald’s is offering something similar, and I would guess in both cases the amount of sugar (added and natural) may be sky-high for a fruit smoothie. That’s something that would make me hesitate. Studies are revealing that sugar is far more dangerous to our bodies than fat.

Hmm- I might try it in place of a meal there? But not to go with it! I have a hard time resisting their burgers, though.

It seems like you can’t avoid fast food! I have six kids and it seems like we’re on the go all the time. This should help me resist getting a chocolate shake!

Looks tasty, but it does have a lot of calories. It’d probably be better to make one’s own smoothies at home, but we’re all so pressed for time! (And who wants to clean a blender?)

Yes, I too wonder about the added sugar–if they use unsweetened fruit, which I doubt it! Just checked the calorie count at Jamba Juice, and their smoothies look to be about the same, depending on # of ounces in serving.
