Big Fork Little Fork iPad App

Big Fork Little Fork iPad App

I am a huge fan of using technology to get kids engaged in topics that they might not otherwise be jazzed about.

My kids love to help out in the kitchen…so long as we’re making something sweet and yummy. I’m working extremely hard to educate them about healthy eating, but let’s face it. Once mom starts talking for more than 30 seconds about anything, it starts to sound like “wah wah wah wah” to kids.

Yes, I have become the droning teacher from the Charlie Brown cartoons.

Anyway, this new iPad app from Kraft, called Big Fork Little Fork looks kind of fun. It allows parents and kids to learn a bunch of stuff about food and cooking.

There are several different areas for families to explore.

“Tips” gives kids and parents advice on things like how to store produce or have engaging dinner conversations with your kids.

“Videos” presents how-to videos of a slew of different kid-friendly recipes.

“Cook” is the recipe section, broken down into easy categories like “kids can cook,” “dinner,” and “snacks and treats.”

“Learn” teaches families important food lessons, such as how to work safely in the kitchen.

“Play” is the video-game styled part of the app that has a few food-based games for kids to check out.

Big Fork, Little Fork was available for download for only $1.99 from the App Store, but it’s currently free until December 31, 2010.  A great price for an app that seems to have a lot of fun stuff for kids.

Now, I just need an iPad.

Well if you already had the iPad then the $1.99 app is a no-brainer. But otherwise I don’t see anything wrong with an inexpensive children’s cookbook that emphasizes how learning to read books doesn’t have to mean a bedtime story … it can mean chocolate chip cookies, too!

I like this. I baked my first browny in second grade and my first peanut chews even earlier. It led me to great things, gormet cake decorating included. (burnout in the kitchen included too, but with the added bonus of knowing the kitchen well enough to whip up five courses in fifteen minutes.) So im all for this app, especialy that its free. :)
