Altra Desk Is a Home Office Bargain

For me, buying furniture is hard. I’m on a tight budget, but I want my room to look nice. I also want to be able to move my furniture up a flight of stairs and around tight corners.

So, when I needed a desk for my home office, I spent several months searching before settling on the Altra metal ladder desk with set of two bookcases from Walmart.

I ordered online using the site-to-store method to save on shipping costs. The desk and bookcases arrived quickly and were easy to assemble. I managed to assemble both bookcases by myself and my husband put together the desk in less than an hour.

The product description on the Walmart website is a little misleading, since it implies the desk is made entirely of metal. The sides are metal, but the shelves are a black finished particle board. For the price, however, it’s sturdy and reasonably attractive. In fact, it’s twice as nice as the desk it’s replacing and it was less than half the price.

What I like the most about this desk is the amount of storage space it gives you. I have all of my books, plus my important files, my computer, my printer, and my Cricut electronic die cutter within easy reach.

Since the desk and the bookcases aren’t physically connected, I can rearrange the room at a later date if needed. I don’t rearrange my office very often, but I like that I have the option of doing so if I choose.

Since it’s inexpensive and doesn’t take up a ton of space, I think this would be a great purchase for a child’s room. You could easily add wicker storage baskets to some of the shelves to give space for toys while still having lots of room for books and everything your child needs to do his homework.

“Ladder” bookcases usually lean up against the wall as part of the support. Is that the case here? If self-standing, I LOVE the idea for a growing child’s room as an option for homework and toy/book storage!

Glad you clarified that it’s not all metal, I was thinking that would be weird, cold and clangy for a desk surface.

It does not lean against the wall for support. My desk and bookcases are currently about three inches away from the wall. Everything is very stable.
