All They Need Is A Cardboard Box

During my childhood, my friends and I eagerly awaited the day when a neighbor would get a new refrigerator. We’d pounce on the discarded box like jaguars, planning out a creative use for the giant structure.

Sometimes it would turn into a school bus, truck or other vehicle. Other times, a playhouse or a jail. Being the bossy one, I was usually the jailor, and not the jailee. Or we’d break the box up and use the large flat pieces as backdrops for the plays we held on our front porch.

So many uses!

Well, kids can’t have JUST a plain old cardboard box anymore, now can they? They start to ask where the DVD player is installed on it or whether it comes with a talking door. I kid..but only a little.

A company called Box Creations takes the plain old box and, while it doesn’t add a DVD player or talking door, it does jazz it up a little to make it fun but still creative for kids.

The princess carriage, shown above, comes with cardboard lanterns, a sunroof (what princess doesn’t have a sunroof in their carriage?), and swinging doors. The image of the carriage and its detailing is pre-printed on the shaped box. It also comes with markers, so kids can destroy, er, decorate, as they see fit. The carriage is large enough to hold 2-3 kids, but you know as well as I do that 6 kids will pack themselves into this puppy.

The pirate ship is also cute.

Each of the Box Creations products run $39.99. I have no idea how this thing gets shipped to you if you order one off of their website. I’m assuming there is some assembly required.

So if you live out in the middle of nowhere, and refrigerator boxes are hard to come by, you may want to check out Box Creations.

I think the idea is really cute and well designed. However, I choke at the idea of spending $40 on cardboard. Is it just me?

The Box Creations all come with line art and some magic markers too so that kids can have a Do It Yourself craft as well. The stractures are really large too. We have the castle one and my daughter and 2 of her freinds can all fit in there at once.
There was some assebly requied but no tools needed it was pretty easy sliding the pieces together and then they kind of fold and lock, so its pretty sturdy. You cna also take it apart and put it back together again.
For $40 its a lot better than having one of those $500 plastic eye sores in the backyard or basement.

how long does it last? If i know i can get a month’s rent out of this, fine. but if it lasts until the first boy makes a tumblesauce, or my girl leaves it our in the rain, forgetit.

I dont know if my comment went in, so what I’m basically saying is that i want my cardboard box to last at least as long as a board game.
